Shiseido today
Shiseido has a pioneering spirit that combines the Western desire for discovery and the oriental flair for elegant aesthetics. Today, Shiseido produces more than 50 kinds of products, from vibrant cosmetics to healing and rejuvenating creams developed using modern medical techniques. In addition to the production of cosmetics, Shiseido is also engaged in the management of Japan's oldest gallery, the support of young Japanese artists, and environmental protection.
Brand history
In the mid-19th century, Arino Fukuhara had the idea to open the first Western-style pharmacy in Japan. The pharmacy finally opened in Tokyo in 1872, and within a few years the company's distinguished scientists had created several patents.
In 1902, the then-called Banbutsu Shisei added an American-style soda and ice cream parlour to its store, becoming the first place to sell these Western products in Japan. In the 1920s, Shiseido continued to discover new processes in the production of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
In the late 1930s, the company arrived in New York. During the war years, however, it was forced to withdraw from the American market. In the meantime it went about building a strong customer base and brand identity worldwide, and after the war Shiseido re-entered the US market.
