ECC transparently checks data integrity stored in the memory in real time. It is able to detect and correct 1-bit and 2-bit errors. Some memory controllers can, in cooperation with ECC, correct errors of even greater magnitude. Most server boards require ECC memory support. In cooperation with parity check, the memory reaches maximum data transfer control.
Registered memories are equipped with a controller that controls access to individual memory modules and facilitates the work and memory controller on the motherboard or processor. Memory outwardly behaves as a single module - the register chip - which is responsible for writing and reading individual memory cells, and controlling the outcome of these operations. This increases the efficiency of memory access and the processing speed, even when more memory modules are used simultaneously. Some server motherboards require registered memory.
Memory has one self-addressed area (memory rank). Most of the server chipsets have limited memory rank or a directly specified memory configuration for each slot, so this information should be taken into consideration when buying future upgrades - if you reach the full rank of memory on the motherboard, you can not add another module, even if some free memory slots are left over.
