A classic buttonhole is made in two or four steps, depending on the type of sewing machine. In the first step, the top and bottom edges of the buttonhole are created. Then the sewing machine moves a little closer to the centre of the buttonhole to create the side stitches. This traditional method provides reliable and tasteful buttonholes that are common on many garments.
