A tuning peg is a tool used to tune drums and some other musical instruments such as stringed instruments with mechanics (guitars). In drums, the tuning knob is used to turn the tuning screws or tensioners, which are placed around the circumference of the drum, to adjust the tension of the membrane. This changes the tone or pitch of the sound the drum produces. Proper tuning is essential to the overall sound of a drum kit and to making the drums fit well into the musical context in which they are used.
