Radar Detection

Radar detection is a function that allows an in-car camera to alert the driver to approaching speed enforcement. There are two basic ways this technology works. The first and more common is passive detection using GPS. The camera contains a database with the locations of fixed speed cameras and average speed zones. As soon as the vehicle approaches such a location, the camera issues an audible or visual warning. For proper functioning, this database needs to be regularly updated. This method is legal in most European countries because it merely informs about known dangerous sections of roads. The second method is active detection, also referred to as an "anti-radar" or "radar detector". Such a device is equipped with an antenna that seeks out and detects microwave signals transmitted by police radars. Unlike GPS detection, it can also detect mobile police patrols. However, the use of active detectors is prohibited in the Czech Republic and many other countries.
