In early September, gaming giant Sony introduced the latest version of the Playstation 4 console, the PlayStation 4 Pro. Compared with the basic version, the Playstation 4 Pro offers improved performance, with support for 4K resolution and HDR image processing. Furthermore, Sony also launched a series of updates optimising over 30 game titles for use with the PS4.
Sony has released updates optimising more than 30 games for 4K resolution. By the end of the year, Sony plans to further optimise more than 45 titles. All other PS4 games can still be played on the Pro version, but "only" in 1080p.
It should be noted that not all titles will be able to make use of native 4K after being updated. In many cases, Sony uses a custom upscaling solution known as "checkerboarding". While this technique is inferior to native 4K, the difference is negligible in practice.
The actual update is quick and easy. After inserting the disc into the drive, or after startup if you bought the game digitally, the patch downloads automatically. Games released after 10.11.2016 will support 4K resolution and HDR display immediately, without the need to download anything.
There are currently over 30 game titles optimised for use with the PS4 Pro. In addition to these, more than 45 other games will be optimised for use with the PS4 Pro, including Watch Dogs 2, Killing Floor 2, The Last Guardian and Final Fantasy XV. In 2017, titles such as Nioh, Resident Evil Biohazard 7, For Honor, Gravity Rush 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone and Gran Turismo Sport will be added to the list. Exciting news for gaming enthusiasts!
