The iOS app may be a bit redundant, but it's functional. For example, you take a picture of a room and then draw the dimension of what you are measuring and the instrument will add the distance after you measure it.
The red button, which is relatively rigid, must be pressed to measure. At longer ranges, you can move your sights around. Watch out for that, but it's a habit.
