While I came across this portable speaker, which I think has no competition in its category, a few others have passed through my hands, hopefully this will help you save time and money when choosing:
JBL Go - decent sound system for your pocket, good sound quality and volume considering the size and weight, but virtually no bass rather a rumble at higher volumes.
Creative Muvo Mini - compared to the JBL Go "stereo" and slightly better bass, but at the expense of higher frequencies, volume comparable (also grunting at certain frequencies), more durable design.
Creative Roar 2 - significantly louder and higher quality music delivery than the previous two models, decent bass, but you can't shake the windows with it, some genres it handles surprisingly well, but others not so much. At higher volumes shouted. Lots of features half of which you won't use, rather heavy below average battery life and not exactly durable design.
Marshall Acton - without battery, but easily portable around the house or apartment, for a slightly higher price (not in alza) you get at least a class better sound quality (at 70% volume, which roughly corresponds to max. Roar 2 also by two classes). Decent bass, but suppresses the midrange on heavily bassed tracks. At reasonable volume, good price / size / sound quality ratio. Sound is too directional, drop in quality unless you sit in front of the speaker.
JBL Xtreme - high volume and pronounced highs, but doesn't really handle the low frequencies (bass is shallow and lackluster considering the size). Durable design, ability to pair two in stereo mode (occasional lagging), for the price I do not recommend (PC speakers Creative Gigaworks T20 for 60€ play comparably well).
Marshall Woburn - non-portable bluetooth speaker, lots of connectivity options, hilarious retro design, decent volume and excellent bass that you feel, the sound has volume and you can feel that it doesn't come out of a small box, on the other hand it is not the most suitable for a small room pushed against the wall (rumble). Excellent for loud rock and electronic music. Similar problem to Acton with sound directionality (highs are lost unless you are in front of the speaker).
Harman Kardon - it suits me the most out of all the speakers mentioned (also according to several reviews it is excellent), it plays very cleanly at lower and high volumes, thanks to a pair of passive transducers it has good bass (it can handle frequencies close to 50Hz) although not as well as the Woburn. The height converters point slightly to the sides, making the sound more spacious and filling the room. Overall, I don't think there is anything to fault it in terms of sound quality. When plugged into the mains it plays slightly better at lower frequencies - 4x25W vs. 4x15W in battery operation). Easily portable thanks to the handle and covered connectors.
portable around the house, garden or cottage I doubt that anyone will pack it in a backpack for camping
weaker battery due to the dimensions, in my opinion, it could easily fit twice the capacity and due to e.g. at the price of power banks it is incomprehensible to me
can't be charged with a standard micro usb charger (adapter like a laptop)
not as durable as JBL models
