Tablets can be bought for relatively little money. However, as when choosing a laptop, the more you are willing to spend, the more you will get. With more expensive tablets, you can expect a better display, better hardware, higher-quality materials, and greater overall performance.
Below are 4 key criteria to help narrow our range of tablets to suit your needs – and your wallet.
If you want a more agile tablet, you should opt for a dual-core processor, which will be powerful enough to run the operating system without any jams, as well as most applications. Performance increases further with quad-core processors, which are worth the investment if you intend to play demanding games with complex graphics.
Popular processor manufacturers include NVIDIA, with its powerful graphics-focussed Tegra; Qualcomm, with their popular Snapdragon processors; and Samsung, with the quad-core Exynos processor. Tablets with Intel processors have an advantage over competitors in that they can also run traditional PC applications; they are available exclusively on Windows 8 tablets.
Tablets have two types of memory. The most important is RAM memory, which is designed to run the operating system and the applications. This type of memory cannot be extended.
RAM Capacity on a tablet with the Android operating system should be at least 1 gigabyte. Smaller amounts may cause complications, for example slow-running applications or automatic termination. iPads and Windows 8 tablets are perfectly set up for optimal memory usage.
The second type of memory is internal storage, which is used for storing installed applications and all of your data (documents, videos, photos, etc.). When choosing a tablet, it is often forgotten in the product descriptions, but the installed operating system consumes a large chunk of the available storage.
In the case of Android tablets, however, the situation is different, because these devices usually have a slot for micro SDHC cards, offering a potential increase of up to 32 gigabytes.
If you frequently carry the tablet with you and prefer a low weight and long battery life, choose a small 7" to 8" tablet. For watching films, playing games, and comfortable browsing on the internet, a larger 9" to 10" display is better. The largest screen size, 11.6", lets you work and read comfortably, for example with Office documents.
IPS LCD technology displays colours more accurately and provides wider viewing angles than LCD panels with TN. The colour spectrum remains without distortion when viewing from a sharp angle.
Screen resolution is measured in pixels on a horizontal x vertical scale, which determines the level of detail of the displayed content. A 7" tablet with a 1280 × 800-pixel image will be noticeably sharper than the same size tablet with a resolution of only 800 × 480 pixels. Generally, higher resolution means better picture quality.
