1/1.5" Sensor Size

A 1/1.5" sensor size indicates the physical dimension of the light-sensitive chip that captures the image in a digital camera. The fractional designation, such as "1/1.5"", is a historical standard that does not directly correspond to the actual diagonal in inches but serves for comparing different sensor types. A sensor of this type has a diagonal of approximately 10.67 mm. Generally, the larger the sensor area, the more light it can capture. This leads to better results when shooting in poor lighting conditions, as images contain less digital noise, which is undesirable graininess and color blotches ruining image details. A larger sensor also makes it easier to achieve a shallow depth of field, the effect where the main subject being photographed is sharp, while the background behind it is pleasantly blurred. This size is a compromise between compactness and image quality and is often found in advanced compact cameras or high-end camera phones.
