DOT 5.1 brake fluids are a type of hydraulic fluid used in vehicle brake systems. They are glycol-based, which means that their chemical base consists of polyglycol ethers. This property gives them the ability to absorb air moisture, which is technically called hygroscopicity. Because of their water absorption, a distinction is made between a 'dry boiling point', which applies to a new liquid, and a 'wet boiling point', which represents the minimum value for a liquid after a certain period of operation, when it already contains approximately 3,7 % water. It is precisely because of the gradual lowering of the boiling point that this fluid must be changed regularly. DOT 5.1 fluids are characterised by their high boiling point and low viscosity, i.e. the degree of internal friction, even at low temperatures. This makes them suitable for modern cars equipped with systems such as ABS or ESP, where they ensure a fast response of the braking system.
