The sensor is a key component of a camera that converts light passing through the lens into a digital image. The sensor size is one of the main factors influencing the quality of the resulting photograph. The figure "1/3.1"" represents the sensor dimension, with this designation stemming from historical standards for television cameras and not being an exact mathematical fraction of an inch. Generally, the larger the number after the slash, the smaller the physical area of the sensor. The 1/3.1-inch size belongs to the smaller sensors typically used in basic smartphone models or webcams. A smaller sensor area means it can capture less light, which can be particularly noticeable in poorer lighting conditions, such as indoors or at dusk. Photographs may then contain more digital "noise," which manifests as graininess and loss of detail. At the same time, smaller sensors usually create images with a large "depth of field," meaning that most of the scene from foreground to background is in focus. It is therefore more difficult with them to achieve a natural blurred background effect, which is often used in portrait photography.
