The surface is quite rough, but the mouse travels well on it. Although the pad is metal, it is not eternal. After a month of use, gray smudges are ground on the aluminum surface of the mouse, so I assume that in a year it will be gray, but ground to a smooth finish and the mouse will not make a crisp sound when moving
