ideal for changing the angle of the blade
sufficient for sharpening everyday knives (grit 1000 is sufficient for sharpening, not for polishing "holiday knives")
same quality as other sharpening stones, but better price
the bamboo pad is for storage/display only, wet sanding would destroy it (luckily there is a rubber one in the package)

The stone works as it should, you just need to soak it thoroughly, 10 minutes at a time. I was also pleased with the many accessories, especially the smoothing stone and the knife attachment. For those who don't read manuals: The bamboo base is only used for storing dry stone. If you put a wet rock in it, you'll be out of pedestals in no time: ) When grinding, a rubber pad is used, which is good enough to hold the stone even on a wet kitchen counter.
