Frequently asked questions when choosing a moka pot

What options are there and how do they differ?

Most moka pots can be heated on a stove, whether gas, electric or induction; although the latter requires the moka pot to be compatibile with induction stoves. Some moka pots can be heated using an electrical output, which are ideal for travelling. The heating method doesn't affect the flavour of the coffee.

How do moka pots work?

The device consists of three parts: the lower chamber, where the water is poured; the central chamber, where ground coffee is placed; and the top chamber, where the brewed drink collects. Preparation is extremely simple: cold water is poured into the lower chamber, medium-coarse ground coffee is placed in the middle chamber, and the pot is then heated on the stove with a moderate flame or plugged into a socket, depending on the model. As the water heats up, it is forced up through the coffee grounds under steam pressure, before collecting in the top chamber as brewed coffee.

Who are moka pots designed for?

Moka pots are easy to use, relatively inexpensive, and provide a distinctive coffee flavour. They are suitable for people who enjoy strong coffee, and for those who don't want to invest heavily in a coffee machine.

Important parameters

Objem

Volume

Moka pot volume is stated in 30 ml portions, which can be a little misleading as most people use larger cup sizes. Therefore, if you usually drink coffee from a regular 250 ml cup, we recommend choosing a larger moka pot. It should be noted that moka pots must be nearly full when brewing coffee, which means you always have to brew the maximum amount of coffee.

Sizes for those who drink from larger cups:

  • 3-4 servings - suitable for two people
  • 6-12 servings - suitable for 3-5 people
  • 13 or more servings - suitable for 6 or more people
Materiál moka konvičky

Material

Moka pots are traditionally made of aluminum due to its excellent heat-conducting properties, which heats the water chamber evenly. Stainless steel moka pots are also available.
