Apple's first keynote of the year is over, and one of the most highly anticipated devices was the new iPad Air. Now it's officially here and it's called iPad Air M1, and as the name makes clear, it combines the popular iPad Air series along with the benefits of Apple's M1 chip. What will it offer and when can we expect to see it on store shelves?

Great iPad Air performance courtesy to the M1 chip

Before the keynote, the internet was rife with speculation whether Apple will add its supercharged M1 chip to iPad Air. Tuesday's unveiling confirmed it. What does the fact that the new iPad Air M1 is built around this processor mean for users? The most significant is the performance boost. The new iPad Air will match the performance of the hitherto top-of-the-line iPad Pro. The power of the M1 processor is especially noticeable when working with video and photos, or when using graphics-intensive apps.

The series that used to be viewed as something akin to Apple tablets Lite has now turned into a formidable device that can handle demanding professional work. Let's also mention that Apple claims a 60% increase in performance over the A14 Bionic chipset that powers the previous generation of iPad Air. The M1 chip is complemented by 8GB of RAM and the new tablet uses AI and machine learning. The operating system is naturally iPadOS 15.

Moving on, 5G support is also present and accounted for, along with the universal USB-C still in place and offering transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbps.

Together with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, the iPad Air 2022 turns into a full-fledged work tool.

Anti-glare Liquid Retina display lets you work with iPad Air out in the sun

The entire front of iPad Air 2022 is taken up by a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display. It's treated with anti-glare coating, so nothing prevents you from working outdoors in direct sunlight. The display uses TrueTone technology, which ensures realistic rendering of all colours while being easy on the eyes. HDR support is a matter of course. Quickly unlocking the device is ensured by the top button, which integrates Touch ID for fingerprint recognition or confirming Apple Pay payments.

Apple has improved the front camera, which now has 12Mpx. It has a wide-angle lens and has the ability to constantly track people and automatically adjust the image even if someone joins you in the picture or if you're moving around while chatting with friends. The rear camera is also 12Mpx and can shoot 4K video as well as scan documents. Stereo speakers are there to provide high-quality audio.

Get through your workday in style with iPad Air

Like the previous model, the new Apple iPad Air supports the necessary peripherals, namely Apple Pen and Magic Keyboard. These turn it into a professional device in the ideal compact size - 24.8cm long, 17.9cm wide and 0.6cm thick. The weight of 462 g won't weigh down your bag too much either. After all, Apple has also thought of portability and promises a battery life of 10 hours, which is plenty for a normal work day.

Apple iPad Air: Price and availability

The new Apple iPad Air will be available in five colours - Space Grey, Pink, Purple, Blue, and Starlight. Pre-sales start on Friday, March 11 and the new devices will go on sale on March 18 in two internal memory configurations:
