Out

Landing the shuttle outside the boundaries. The boundary lines count as the playing field, so if the shuttle lands on the line it is still “in”.

Backhand

One of the basic strokes, played on the left side by a right-handed person and on the right side by a left-handed person. Backhand strokes are hit with the back of the hand leading

Forehand

One of the basic strokes, played on the right side by a right-handed person and on the left side by a left-handed person. Also called a palm strike.

Drop

A shot played from your rearcourt just over the opponent’s net. Drop shots are used when you want to force your opponent to get close to the net and expose his rearcourt, where you are planning to aim the next strike

Clear

A shot played to land the shuttle on the opponent’s rearcourt baseline. A well-played clear shot is particularly effective in singles, because it forces the opponent to move all the way to the rearcourt. This leaves his forecourt exposed.

Short Serve

A stroke played to force the opponent to move into his forecourt. This exposes the rearcourt for another shot. You can play a forehand short serve or a backhand short serve.

Lob

An underarm shot from the forecourt aimed to make the shuttle land as near to the opponent’s baseline as possible
