Breathalysers

Alcohol testers are handy devices that can quickly determine the residual alcohol level in your blood and tell you whether it’s safe for you to drive. The main difference between the various alcohol testers is their sensor type.

Breathalyser types

Alcohol testers with a semiconductor sensor - these testers are suitable for occasional use. You have to breathe directly on the tester’s sensor. The sensor in this type tends to wear down over time, requiring a replacement.

Alcohol testers with an electrochemical sensor - this type is more expensive and is used by the police or employers who need to supervise their employees on a daily basis. In this case, you don’t need to breathe directly on the sensor; the tester automatically samples the air necessary for analysis. This method is easier on the sensor, which gives it a longer lifespan.

Useful alcohol tester functions and features

  • Test memory – the device stores the last few test results.
  • PC connection - enables comprehensive evaluation.
  • Smartphone connection - plug a small, sensor-equipped device into the phone port and a phone app can take care of all the breathalyser functions.
  • Car recharge - the tester does not require a mains outlet; just plug it into your car cigarette lighter receptacle.
  • Some alcohol testers keep track of the volume of air you have breathed into the tester.
  • Sound alarm - alerts you in case it detects residual alcohol.
  • Durable carry case.
  • Alcohol tester accessories include mainly spare mouthpieces or replacement sensors.
