Image Processing Technology - TN

While still widely available, TN is one of the older LCD display technologies. Its biggest advantages include low production costs and fast response times. Fast response means that the monitor is able to change the image quickly. For this reason, the technology is widely used in gaming monitors.

TN - Twisted Nematic

Like other LCD imaging technologies, TN is named after the behaviour of liquid crystals inside the subpixels. In monitors with this designation, the subpixels transmit light when at a standstill. By applying an electric current, the molecules inside the pixel turn, thus producing an image. The name Twisted Nematic technology is in reference to the process of displaying black colour, where there is a complete, helical twisting of molecules within a pixel.

This brings lower power consumption while displaying bright colours. At the same time, each image change is processed at incredible speed. In comparison with other technologies, TN monitors have no competition in terms of their response speed, hence it is an ideal option for gamers. Last but not least, a great advantage of TN monitors is their low manufacturing cost and the associated low selling price. Compared with other imaging techniques, TN monitors are considerably cheaper.


However, TN technology also has several shortcomings. The first is narrow viewing angles. In other words, when looking at the screen from the side, the colour becomes distorted, resulting in poor image quality. Another problem occurs if a pixel stops working (dead pixel / subpixel), as it then remains continuously lit, which can affect the overall viewing experience. This issue is unique to TN monitors. For other imaging technologies, dead pixels remain black, which is far less intrusive.
