Founded: 1836 in Manchester, UK
Founder: James Galt

  • Galt is the oldest still-active toy company in the world


A native of Scotland, James Galt moved to Manchester in 1836, where he set up a company providing educational equipment for children. He soon became a respected businessman and a symbol of childhood education. In the 1850s, Galt starting publishing educational books designed to teach children in an engaging and entertaining way.

James Galt died in 1860 and passed control of the business to his eldest son, Robert Galt. In 1957, almost a hundred years later, the company moved from Manchester to Cheadle in Chesire and started its own Galt Toys division.

The strength of the company lies in its traditional combination of science, creativity and the desire to offer something new. With 175 years of experience in toy production and childhood education, Galt offers high-quality educational equipment designed to help children learn while having fun.
