easy to open, but the baby (1 year old in our case) can't do it
it is not as noisy when opening as metal barriers (we have this wooden and one metal Lindam barrier on the staircase, the metal one is noisy - it clacks when walking / shaking and the closing system is noisy when opening and closing
it does not have a bottom "rail" that you could possibly trip over
