I've been trying to see how it reacts to smoke. It is responsive, but I had to scald it until I was afraid I would burn the plastic cover. Better to have it than not to have it, it's not an overly sensitive device, I think.

It can also be used without the main unit - it has a built-in mini siren. I tested its functionality by blowing thick cigarette smoke into it. The alarm went off immediately. I recommend mounting it on the ceiling, as smoke starts to accumulate under the ceiling when it is lit. A flashlight is included.
