The NEEWER microphone itself works great without this device, you just need to set the volume to 100% and the gain to max +20dB. Some sound cards can even do +30dB, but then it makes a lot of noise. The problem arose for me when I use the earphones for the spoken word at the same time (in-ear headphones, i.e. really small audio magnet), but at +30dB the microphone WITHOUT the added source can recognize the headphones and a cyclic resonance is created. Like putting a microphone next to a speaker. So I needed something that could amplify the sound without the headphones getting in the way, and this product is absolutely perfect for that. With budget gear it doesn't really matter what source you use, I bought this one just because I have a microphone from the same brand and I like things to match. If you still need to tweak the gain, I recommend downloading the Equalizer APO program, which allows you to set any variation of gain and other functions and settings. However, beware - the program does not replace this device, because it is still amplifying the input signal to the sound card directly from the source, while the "amplifier" takes the sound from the microphone, adjusts its volume and only then sends the finished "thing" on, i.e. you don't have to deal with overdrive in the recording. Briefly: when you set high gain in the software, you reduce your tolerance for overdriven audio input, while with microphone power you keep the tolerance. So with power, you have far less chance of "tearing up" the sound with a random change in voice intensity. So you can speak normally and just tweak some of the quiet spots due to voice drop in the editing. As an added effect, your recording will gain a bit of quality and depth, a natural effect of power. For me and my needs ok, for anyone else to consider. UNDER THE LINE: I chose the USB power supply because of the ease of installation on the back of the PC box, where I don't want to have a black cube with a transformer, which could still emit negative interference waves in that area. The USB power supply has only 5V, but the internal electronics can increase this. You will probably never need the whole 48V anyway and for the operation of my Neewer 700 a couple of milliamps is enough, which the 5V USB in conjunction with this device can deliver without any problems.
it works (I'll elaborate in the description below)
