The applicator is a huge help compared to the kits without it, but before using it for the first time I recommend watching some video on how to actually use it. The applicator also does not tension the tape in any way, so it is necessary to keep a close eye on the exact seating, otherwise sometimes "faldies" want to form. But with a little care it can be glued perfectly even in amateur conditions. Unlike some video tutorials, I don't recommend cutting the tape in advance unless you are 100% sure of the exact length - if you are doing both wheels of a normal bike, there is no tape to spare in the kit.
