Webcams

Webcams are used primarily for Skype video conferencing, shooting YouTube videos, etc. The most important factor when choosing is the resolution, but you should also keep in mind how many frames per second it can capture and what additional features it has.

What should I know before buying a webcam?

Resolution

Indicates the number of pixels that make up the final image. Higher resolution means more detailed video and therefore better image quality.

  • 1280 × 720 px - sufficient for video conferences and calls.
  • 1920 x 1080 px - ideal for YouTubers and high-quality streams.

Framerate (FPS)

This figure indicates the number of frames a webcam can take per second and how fast it can send them. Generally speaking, a higher framerate gives you smoother image. Basic cameras have FPS of about 20-30, the best webcams provide 60 or more.

With or without a microphone?

Cameras with a built-in microphone are very useful for Skype, video conferences, or shooting videos. If you don’t need to capture sound or already use a separate microphone, then you can buy a camera without a mic.

Autofocus (AF)

Webcams equipped with this system can focus automatically, improving the image quality.

Useful webcam features

  • Remote control - comes in handy if you don’t want to run to your PC every time you need to adjust the camera settings.
  • Face tracking - the camera is able to constantly track and focus on your face, even if, for example, you move around the room.
  • Fill lights - built-in LEDs can provide extra lighting, making you more visible on the video.
  • Dimensions - small and light webcams are suitable for people who need to carry them around or travel frequently. Larger and heavier models typically provide higher video quality.

Webcams - additional info

Web cameras, or webcams, are very similar devices to classical video cameras and digital video cameras. They often feature a built-in microphone and connect to computers using USB ports, and are mainly used for video communication over the Internet, shooting and recording videos.

Webcams can be used as tracking and security cameras in offices and other premises, or used as an information channel. When connected to the Internet, they can obtain information eg. snow conditions in ski resorts, monitor traffic conditions etc. Their use is virtually limitless.
