Mechanical Stabilization

Mechanical stabilization is a technology in cameras and lenses that reduces image blur caused by photographer's hand shake. Inside the device are motion sensors that detect even the slightest movements. Based on this data, the system then physically shifts either the image sensor in the camera body or a group of lenses in the lens. This movement is performed in the exact opposite direction to which the camera moved, thereby compensating for the shake and keeping the image "still" on the sensor. This allows for sharp images even at longer exposure times, for example in poorer lighting conditions, without the need for a tripod. The technology also contributes to smoother video recordings.
