String trimmers are used to trim grass in places where your large lawnmower simply can’t reach, like under fences and along the roads or curbs. String trimmers use a nylon line that stretches out stiffly by centrifugal force, cutting vegetation in the process. Due to their low power output and small coverage, string trimmers are not suitable for mowing large areas.
