I watched the official instructional video and did everything to a tee anyway. I still ripped off the thread prong reducer on the selfie stick. When using both adhesives, the thread only catches on a fraction of a millimetre and it does not last the tightening. At the same time, without the adhesives there is not enough friction to keep the camera in a vertical position. The emergency solution is to borrow a threaded bolt from a floating grip, it's a millimeter longer and works great.
