Each PC case fan has several important parameters that you should consider when choosing one. These are mainly the size of the fan itself, its speed, its noise level and its airflow.

What Size Should PC Case Fans Be?

PC case fans are available in many sizes. The most popular fans are the 120mm and 140mm variants, but smaller or larger fans are not unusual. What size will be perfect for you?

Small PC case fans up to 70mm are used in small PC cases. Because the blades are small, the fan must have a high speed.
PC case fans of 80×80mm are suitable for all types of cases. They have a slightly better speed ratio and airflow.
PC case fans of 92×92mm already require a little more installation space. The reward is higher airflow.
PC case fans of 120×120mm are the ideal compromise between size and cooling performance. They are a very popular option.
PC case fans of 140×140mm may not fit in every PC case any longer. They offer high airflow.
Large PC case fans from 180mm have the best airflow at the lowest speed. So they are very quiet.

The RPM is an Important Parameter of PC Case Fans

Each PC case fan has a specified minimum and a maximum number of revolutions per minute (RPM). Some models offer the user the possibility to control the speed. In this case, it's up to you whether you prefer power or a quiet operation. Take a look at speed-controlled fans.

Smart fan with speed control — Fan speed control can be automatic or manual. Always make sure that the model you choose supports the control. Motherboards with a voltage adjustment function offer the possibility to control unsupported fans.

Other Features of PC Case Fans

When choosing a new PC case fan, consider a few other features and functions that affect cooling performance, noise levels and a few other aspects of daily use.

The PWM fan allows the user to control the speed (RPM) at will.
Maximum TDP refers to how much heat the fan can dissipate. Processors and graphics cards also have this parameter.
The bearing type indicates the way the blades are attached to the centre of the fan. The most common systems are HBS, SSO2 or FDB.
Backlit PC case fans can glow in different colours. Some support a single colour and others dazzle with the entire RGB spectrum.
