Micro ATX Motherboards - Basic Specifications

Micro ATX motherboards have the same height and width which is 244mm. When compared to a standard ATX board, a Micro ATX Motherboard is up to 25% smaller. An mATX (the abbreviation for Micro ATX Motherboard) has 4 slots for RAM or PCIe. You get a wide choice of brands and the motherboard can be equipped with an Intel or AMD processor.

Micro ATX Motherboard vs. ATX? Is Size the Only Difference?

What are the main differences between a classic ATX and a Micro ATX motherboard? They differ in size, price and the number of PCle slots used to connect graphics and sound cards, as well as other components. A Classic ATX board is built for maximum performance and will be appreciated by players with high demands. For gamers whose performance bar isn't set as high, or for casual users, the micro ATX motherboard which is cheaper, is a good choice.

When choosing a motherboard, pay attention to what kind of processor can be fitted with ATX and micro ATX motherboards. Some boards only support Intel CPUs, while others support AMD. Keep in mind the processor architecture x86 and x86-64, i.e. 32-bit vs. 64-bit.

Mini ITX vs Micro ATX Motherboards - When Use Gives Way to Size

The size of Mini ITX motherboards is even smaller than those of the Micro ATX Motherboards, which while it brings about more saving of space, mini ITX motherboards also have limitations - they have only two RAM slots and a single PCle slot. A Mini ITX board is more suitable for office computers.

A Micro ATX Motherboard Case Saves Space

A Micro ATX Motherboard case is tailored to the size of a smaller Micro ATX board, although the wiring standard used also fits into a classic and larger ATX case. The main advantage is therefore the saving of space. The Micro ATX computer case also allows you to it rotate by 90 degrees to create more space.

SFX Power Supply for Micro ATX Motherboard

The power supply for a micro ATX motherboard can be in the classic ATX format. Reach for an SFX power supply if you want to save space, especially in combination with a microATX or miniITX case. A typical SFX format power supply offers 300 W of power and has a size of 125 × 100 × 76mm.
