Image Processing Technology for Monitors
LCD monitors
The internal construction of LCD monitors consists of several layers. The actual pixels are not lit – they are only capable of transmitting light. For this reason, they must be illuminated by LEDs. Compared with OLED displays, which don't require backlighting, they consume more energy. On the other hand, production of LCD displays is considerably cheaper.
TN (Twisted Nematic)
One of the older versions of LCD, which is still in use. TN monitors are cheap to produce and provide high levels of brightness and fast response times, which makes them popular with gamers. The disadvantage is worse viewing angles at which contrast is lost and colours become distorted.
IPS (In-Plane Switching)
IPS screens offer an excellent price-performance ratio and are often found in more expensive models. You can expect true colour reproduction and wide viewing angles. Compared with TN displays, however, IPS models offer lower contrast and slower response times.
VA (Vertical Alignment)
Available as MVA or PVA technologies, these stand somewhere between TN and IPS and are characterised by high contrast, wide viewing angles and true colour reproduction.
OLED monitors
OLED is a premium imaging technology that utilises controlled electroluminescence in organic light-emitting diodes. OLED screens are divided into two basic categories:
AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode)
This type is widely used in televisions, mobile phones and monitors. It is by far the best imaging technology on the market. You can enjoy fast response times, wide viewing angles, low power consumption, and excellent colour reproduction. AMOLED displays perfectly display black colour, which means the overall contrast is better. The disadvantage is higher cost and a shorter life span – they typically last half as long as LCD displays.
PMOLED (Passive Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode)
Compared with AMOLED, this type features a simpler design. It is used mainly for smaller displays and is ideal for displaying static information and text.
