Back protector types
Soft-shell back protectors are made of flexible and light material that adapts to your body shape, so it does not restrict your movement. In case of fall, however, the material hardens, absorbing and redistributing the force of the impact over a larger area. Soft-shell back protectors are very light and comfortable.
Hard-shell back protectors have an inner and outer layer. The outer layer is a rigid plastic (polypropylene) shell divided into (loosely connected) sections to avoid restricting your movement. Hard-shell back protectors provide a greater sense of safety, but this feeling is purely subjective. Their protective characteristics are actually comparable to those of soft-shell back protectors.
