Steppers

Steppers are workout machines that simulate walking up the stairs. They are suitable for strengthening leg, hip, and buttock muscles and burning fat.

Types

Mini stepper

  • Mini steppers are frameless, compact, and highly portable.

Stair stepper

  • This type is equipped with handrails, has a robust construction, and is suitable for prolonged exercise.

Resistance

  • With some rare exceptions, mini steppers generally don’t let you adjust the resistance - only the step height. All stair steppers, on the other hand, have adjustable resistance.

Resistance adjustment

  • Shock absorber shift
    • Resistance is adjusted by shifting shock absorbers along the foot plates.
    • This method is cheap, but it’s also uncomfortable and rather time-consuming. Frequently used in cheap steppers.
  • Via tension knob
    • Resistance can be increased or decreased by rotating the tension knob. This solution has the best price-quality ratio.
  • Magnetic brake
    • Can be found in steppers designed for commercial use.
    • Provides long service life, but also raises purchasing cost.

Design and weight capacity

  • Generally speaking, the heavier the user, the more robust the stepper’s construction should be. It’s the only way the machine can provide you the necessary support and stability during workout.
  • The stepper’s weight capacity should be at least 20% higher than the user’s weight.

Heart rate monitoring

  • Most models include a touchscreen or an ear sensor. The accuracy of measured data is merely approximate.
  • The more expensive models are compatible with chest strap heart rate monitors of different brands. The data is wirelessly transmitted to the stepper display and it’s the most accurate measurement method available.
