There are situations that no one can be prepared for.
A cold London morning. A large suitcase that washed up in the Thames. Detective Chief Inspector Erika Foster and her colleague Moss already suspect that an unpleasant surprise awaits them inside... But no one can be prepared for what they will actually find when they manage to open the rusted suitcase after several futile attempts...
Although it's not the first time Detective Chief Inspector Erika Foster has faced a brutal murder, a suitcase containing the dismembered body of a young man washed up on the banks of the Thames shocks her. In addition, two weeks ago, the body of a young woman was found in a similar suitcase. Is it just a coincidence or will Erika and her team have to face a serial killer again? What about other cases that happened in a different district and under different circumstances? Could there be any commonalities with the case of the bodies in the suitcases?

Bryndza is slowly but surely becoming my favorite writer. And even though I've only read Girl in the Ice and then this book, which is the fifth installment in the series, it doesn't hurt much. The plot is again well developed and I was not bored even for a moment, on the contrary. Erika may not be the paragon of all virtues but she has my sympathy. I look forward to the next book.

Once again an excellent whodunit, in each book of this series the story line is told differently and that's a good thing.

Another great book. An amazing read and although it was clear to me who was behind the murders, I was completely surprised by the ending. The whole story is gripping and suspenseful.

CHAPTER 1 MONDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2017
"I tried to get everyone to move upstairs, ma'am, but I didn't want to leave the place unattended," the young woman said, looking at Erika through the raindrops. She was small and slender, but her eyes glittered with determination. "Are you here alone?" Erika asked, glancing at the suitcase. At one end she saw a hole from which two pale, swollen fingers stuck out. The woman nodded. "The other special constable I serve with had to go deal with a triggered alarm in one of those office buildings," she replied. "That shouldn't happen," Moss responded. „Special constables should always be kept in pairs. So you're on night duty in central London alone?" „All right, Moss..." began Erika. "No, boss, that's not right. These people are volunteers! Why can't they pay more police officers?" „I became a Special Constable just so I could gain experience and start working in the police force full time..." "We need this place to be empty before we lose any chance of getting forensic evidence," Erika interrupted them. Moss nodded, and together they began to herd the crowd of onlookers towards the stairwell. Erika noticed that at the end of the small beach, next to a high wall, an elderly man with long grey hair and a brightly coloured poncho had dug two small holes. Unaware of the people or the rain, he continued digging. Erika pulled out her walkie-talkie and summoned all the cops in the area. There was an ominous silence. She noticed that the man in the colourful poncho ignored Moss and continued to dig. „I need you to go up there, up the stairs," Erika said, walking from the suitcase towards the man. He looked up at her and continued to pat the rain-soaked pile of sand. "Excuse me. You. I'm talking to you." „And who are you?" The man asked imperiously, scanning her from top to bottom.
