About the father's role

Male identity needs role models. What role models will today's children identify with? How has the role of the father changed historically? These questions are addressed by psychologist Tomáš Novák in his book. He notes how the behaviour of fathers was affected by the circumstances of the time (war, totalitarianism), but above all he describes an interesting contemporary psychological and sociological trend - the twilight of patriarchal fathers and the dawn of the so-called new fatherhood. The modern new father is significantly involved in the upbringing of his children, has the ability to resolve disputes democratically compared to the authoritarianism of traditional fathers, and the role of "leader" is changing into that of a partner who is increasingly inspired by many of the skills of the original mother. Unfortunately, contemporary fathers are also confronted with family problems, so the author offers a psychological perspective on the topic of alternating post-divorce care, the father rejection syndrome and the risks of paternal deprivation.
