Alfred de Musset: Lorenzaccio

Lorenzo de Medici decides to rid Florence of the tyrant. In order to gain his trust, he participates in his cruelties, organizes parties for him, and acts as his confidant and pimp. Lorenzo becomes Lorenzaccio. The mask is digging into the skin. The means turn into the goal and the real one is lost in sight. Even reaching it does not bring relief. Lorenzaccio is a romantic drama with all the trimmings: the main character's inner strife, the apotheosis of freedom and the tragic ending. In this play, too, which takes its subject from George Sand, in a historical fresco of Renaissance Florence influenced by the civil troubles of the Second Empire in 1834, it is above all a very personal confession of a child of his age.
