An unconventional work from the pen of one of the most successful authors of our time
Dolores Claiborne lives in a village on the small island of Little Tall and earns a hard living as housekeeper to the wealthy Vera Donovan, who goes there every year for the summer season to her house. The adaptable Dolores also gets used to Vera's domineering nature and the two women eventually start to get along quite well.
When the old and sick Vera dies years later and leaves all her property to Dolores, the villagers think Dolores killed her. In a gripping confession to the police, Vera denies the murder, but during the interrogation other dark circumstances from the main character's troubled life come to light.
King's incredibly compelling novel, written as a monologue by a woman haunted by life, is a bit out of step with King's other work. The usual mystery is represented by the solar eclipse, which played a significant role in the story.

A great example of King's ability to write unusually about ordinary things. Even though there's no prehistoric evil going on or virus outbreak, just an elderly woman talking about her life, it's sharply readable. I enjoyed it from start to finish, the length of the book was perfect, such a treat.

Amazing, wonderful, perfect. For me, it was Mr. King for the second time. I finally committed to his work and I can't help but wonder. I had him pegged only as a horror writer, and lo and behold. this man has managed to create such a remarkable and utterly believable female character. I bow and bow. And the language, such a caressing way of working with words. I immediately rank the author among my favorites.

I don't understand at all where it was in King that he was able to create such extraordinarily strong and realistic female characters in his time (not only the lead Dolores, but also the famously handled role of her cynical but ultimately correct employer Vera). Perfect descriptions of the brisk Maine coastline that God (or is it the devil? ) once upon a time, he dumped sleepy towns without a whimper, where everybody fishes for a living and he who doesn't beat his wife isn't a man. It's rare that I root so hard for a central character.
