Umberto Eco
Umberto Eco (1932–2016) studied medieval philosophy and literature, worked as a university professor, worked in television and publishing, and wrote columns for avant-garde magazines. In 1971 he became the first professor of semiotics, and at the age of forty-eight, he published his first novel, which immediately became a bestseller (The Name of the Rose, 1980). He is a prominent representative of postmodernism and the avant-garde of the 1960s and the holder of numerous prestigious awards and several honorary doctorates. Eco's fiction also draws on the wide range of his professional interests, yet despite its intellectualism, it maintains worldwide popularity.
