Hannibal at the Gates

Ever since the time of ancient historians, hundreds of biographical and military history books have been written about Hannibal. His life story and leadership skills, however, continue to inspire historians and writers to create new works, looking at the known facts from various angles and seeking answers to unanswered questions. The military historian Richter has joined them with a fictionalised, literary non-fiction account of Hannibal's life path, set against the colourful backdrop of a historical drama, which the “Second Punic War” undoubtedly was. This war marked the beginning of the fall of mighty Carthage in its fierce struggle for world domination with ancient Rome.

Hannibal is rated as one of the greatest military geniuses of all time. He is often referred to as the “father of strategy,” and even the Romans, Hannibal's mortal enemies, adopted many of his tactical elements. The author of the book seeks to overcome the one-sided bias of the original Roman sources and also attempts to answer some questions, for example, why Hannibal did not complete his grandiose victory at Cannae with a march on Rome.

Despite its extensive fictionalisation, the book is a work of literature that fully respects historical facts and emphasises the way the famous Carthaginian general managed to resolve seemingly hopeless war situations and achieve victory even under adverse circumstances. One of his most famous feats was the march of his army across the Pyrenees and the Alps into northern Italy, where he then crushed several Roman armies in a series of battles, the most famous of which are the victories at Lake Trasimene and especially the Battle of Cannae. Hannibal then continued the war in Italy for more than ten years, during which he did not lose a single major engagement, but was unable to bring the conflict to a victorious conclusion. After the landing of the Roman legions in North Africa, he was therefore forced to return to Carthage, where he was finally defeated by the Roman general Scipio Africanus at the Battle of Zama and was forced to leave Carthage for exile…
