Tomáš Etzler’s autobiographical book maps a decade of his life in Asia, where he spent seven years as Czech Television’s permanent correspondent in China and then three years as a freelancer in Hong Kong. During this time, he prepared more than five hundred reports and hundreds of live broadcasts for Czech Television alone from all of China’s provinces, as well as from twelve other Asian countries. Tomáš Etzler worked in the Middle Kingdom not only for ČT, but also for CNN, so he offers a unique comparison of working for the state television of a small European country and for a global news giant.
The book does not try to explain or lecture about China, but is rather a collection of human stories from the daily lives of ordinary people in a communist country through the eyes of a foreign correspondent. It is a testimony from an author who is not afraid to document events that the ruling communists try to hide from the world. Something for which he was countless times detained and harassed by the Chinese police. The book is particularly poignant at this time and in many ways helps to understand the challenges that a strengthening, totalitarian China poses to the entire world.

Tomáš Etzler is a Czech journalist who worked as a permanent correspondent for Czech Television in China from 2007 to 2014. In 1999, he started working for CNN as a news editor and then spent five years as a CNN war correspondent in Haiti, Iraq and Afghanistan. He has received numerous awards for his work, including an Emmy Award, which he won in 2008 as the first Czech to do so. During his time in China, he prepared and presented over five hundred reports and live broadcasts.
