Little spider Varhanek
A fairy-tale guide to spirituality by parish priest Martina Viktoria Kopecka
The little spider Varhánek lives in the pipes of the old organ. He has the best seat - he can see the whole church from up high! And when he befriends Sugar Mouse, they begin to discover together what is going on in the church. What do candles, singing and the smell of incense mean? Varhánek and Cukřenka experience moments of celebration and silence, joy and reflection - at Christmas, Easter, baptism, wedding and during Lent. Each chapter of the fairy tale story is accompanied by an artful double-page spread full of playful tasks, questions, trivia and creative challenges that help children discover a deeper meaning of traditions and church life.
This book sensitively and with gentle humour introduces children to the spiritual world, cultural heritage and the beauty of symbols.
Martina Viktoria Kopecká
Parish priest of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. She was born in 1986 in Louny, but for quite a few years her mail has been coming to the centre of Prague. In addition to theology, she also studied psychology and special education to add the human soul (and neurophysiology) to her teachings on the Spirit. She describes herself as a perpetual student, so she is currently working on her doctoral thesis and completing further psychotherapy training. For the tenth year, he has been serving God and the people at St. Nicholas on Old Town Square and also in a small chapel in Strašnice in Prague. In 2013, she was elected to the Central Executive Committee of the World Council of Churches in South Korea, and during her eight years in office in Geneva, she has found that ecumenism - inter-church cooperation and interfaith dialogue - is her way of life. Her role as a parish priest goes beyond - or rather complements - her many other roles, for example as president of the Meeting Brno festival or as an Ambassador of Good Will for the Czech Republic.
