Memory
Why We Remember and How to Recall What Matters
Do you often struggle to remember where you put your keys? Do you remember things differently from your friends? In short, are you forgetful? There's no need to panic!
Memory is much more than just a perfect record of the past – and what's more, it can be successfully trained so you can remember what is truly important in your life. The human brain isn't built for memorising, but primarily for thinking. Based on current research and compelling personal stories, neuroscientist and psychologist Charan Ranganath debunks common myths about memories, forgetting, and effective learning. He reveals not only how our brain processes the past, but more importantly, how we use this information to understand ourselves, in our relationships, or to weave ideas about the future.
In the book, you will learn, among other things:
– If we didn't forget, we would need to store about 34 gigabytes of information in our heads every day.
– The ability to recall what we need in the moment can be learned.
– By working with our memory, we can escape the grip of prejudice and the clutches of trauma.
– It is surprisingly easy to implant false memories in people, even of acts they did not commit.
– We can combat the decline of memory during ageing with proven methods.
– Discover the fascinating mechanisms that play a key role in how we experience our lives.
