Mrs. Curie

A renowned biography of a woman whose name everyone knows, a woman of immense talent and passion for science, a woman of boundless will and diligence, who succeeded not only in breaking into a field previously reserved for men, but also in excelling in it in a truly extraordinary way and bringing fundamental scientific discoveries to the world.

Marie Skłodowska was a patriotic Pole, but her desire for education led her to France, where, at the age of twenty-four, in 1891, she became the first woman ever to pass the entrance examinations for the Faculty of Physics and Chemistry at the Sorbonne in Paris. After a few years, she met her future husband, the physicist Pierre Curie. Together, under very modest circumstances, they dedicated themselves to radioactivity research. For the discovery of polonium and radium, she and her husband were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903. After his tragic death in a traffic accident in 1906, she continued the work she had started, which brought her a second Nobel Prize in 1911. For the rest of her life, she devoted herself to intensive scientific research at the Radium Institute, which she helped to found. The only exception was the First World War, during which she built and operated an extensive system of mobile and stationary X-ray facilities for wounded soldiers.

This biography, written by Curie’s daughter Ève, is not just an account of her scientific career, but also an insider’s view, a vivid depiction of the entire personality of this exceptional woman, her hopes and disappointments, her joys and sorrows. Due to its readability, literary quality, and emotional depth, this biography has lost none of its impact, even sixty years after it was written. During the previous regime, the biography was published in our country several times, most recently in 1971, and each time it was significantly shortened and censored. As a result, the reader did not learn, for example, about the scientist's critical views on Russian rule in Poland, her contacts with Western statesmen, her visit to President Masaryk, or Pierre Curie's interest in spiritualism. We are publishing Madame Curie for the first time in its complete form, as the author wrote it, and with an afterword by the leading Czech nuclear expert, Dana Drábová.
