Heaven knows no chosen ones

"Anyone who knows something about death also knows something about love."

While visiting a friend in a small sanatorium in the Swiss mountains, the aging car racer Clerfayt makes a casual proposal to the beautiful and fragile Lillian. The terminally ill girl is so worn down by her slow death under medical supervision that she decides to accept the not-so-serious proposal and, despite warnings from doctors and friends, goes to Paris with her new friend. Thanks to an unexpected burst of love with no future, she lives every remaining second intensely. Of course, as it is with feelings and relationships, the situation gradually becomes more complicated.

A film adaptation of the novel was made in 1977 by director Sidney Pollack, starring Al Pacino.

Erich Maria Remarque

(1898-1970) At the age of eighteen he volunteered for the army and was seriously wounded on the Western Front. After the First World War he travelled extensively and had a variety of jobs: He worked as a teacher, accountant, salesman, sold tombstones, raced cars and worked as an editor at the Berlin magazine Sport im Bild. In 1928, his anti-war novel, On the Western Front, was published, which made him almost instantly famous all over the world and was the basis for two films. In 1933, he went to Switzerland as an enemy of Nazi Germany, was placed on the index of banned authors and his books were publicly burned; he was later stripped of his German citizenship. He emigrated to the USA in 1939 and did not return to Europe until after the Second World War. It was then that his other anti-war novels were written: Arc de Triomphe (1946), Spark of Life (1952), Black Obelisk (1956) and Night in Lisbon (1962). He died in 1970 in Locarno, Switzerland.
