"When you are born into a family of a rapist and an alcoholic, you have two choices about what to do with your life. First of all, you can screw it up. Or you'll screw it up less if you try harder. It's time for the truth about who I really am. And I believe I'm not just writing my own story."
Tomáš Šebek, surgeon and author of successful books on humanitarian missions, embarks on his most challenging journey yet. A journey into a childhood spent in a dysfunctional family. A journey of personal and professional failures, partner infidelities and lies. But also the path of determination to defy fate and the desire to take life into your own hands.
Brawls in the streets of old Prague's Karlín alternate with episodes from operating theatres, and the thrilling expeditions are interspersed with even more thrilling circumstances of building one's own company. But all those adventures behind the plane's nose, in flooded tunnels or in war zones pale in comparison to the most difficult mission - to be a good father to four children and not repeat the mistakes of their parents.
The book, written in Šebek's typically raucous, energetic style and with a sense of humour and exaggeration, draws on the author's experience to address serious social problems - domestic violence, misinformation and addiction. In contrast, the values stand out, like love, bravery, Discipline, passion or gratitude, whose true meaning is discovered on everyday occasions and in the broader perspective of social responsibility. Shebek writes painfully open, yet liberating confession, which is a kind of medical report, "objective finding", that speaks volumes about more than just him, but about all of us. The book is accompanied by illustrations by the author.
