Petr Motýl, an experienced prose writer, spent his childhood in Klatovy, the “gateway to the Bohemian Forest,” and with this book, he returns to the world of storytelling he used to hear as a young boy, to the world of adventure books from ancient times he borrowed from the Klatovy library. The history of the yeoman family from Třešňová, which begins and ends at the fortress beneath the deep forest, takes place at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The text exudes the author's joy in storytelling; he puts his own spin on old legends, brings the giants of the Bohemian Forest to the pages of the book, has the yeoman from the Bohemian Forest fight alongside Charles IV in Italy, and depicts the beauty of the Bohemian Forest's nature. He acknowledges many of his literary predecessors, from the Zbraslav Chronicle through Vančura's Marketa Lazarová to the fairy tales of the French countryman Henri Pourrat, who found a home in Bohemia. “On the shoulders of giants,” however, Petr Motýl stands on his own two feet, and his stylistic work is supremely convincing and distinctive.
Petr Motýl (born 1964) is a prose writer and poet. His work is extensive and diverse in both style and theme. He published the postmodern grotesque prose novel Doktor Pilka si kope hrob (Doctor Pilka Digs His Grave) in 2017 with the Volvox Globator publishing house.
