Glass Room

Inspired by the fate of the Brno Villa Tugendhat, the story mirrors the tragic fate of the Czech nation during the 20th century in the lives of the owners of the house.

Fiancés Viktor and Liesel want to enter married life in style and modernity - in a house that will carry their progressive outlook on life in its foundation. An upper-class Judeo-Christian couple has the means for timeless elegance and in 1929 hires architect Reiner von Abt, whose minimalist vision of combining indoor and outdoor space by maximizing the use of glass space excites them. But is a house open to the eyes of strangers suitable for people living their lives full of small and bigger secrets? The private pleasures and parties of the First Republic elite in this architectural gem are soon interrupted by the Nazis and the couple must leave the villa and the country. The unusual building then passes from one hand to another - after the Nazis, it is taken over by the communists, who are particularly irritated by its opulent otherness.

The novel was nominated for the prestigious Man Booker Prize in 2009.

The film adaptation of the story, made by director Julius Ševčík (Masaryk, Normal, Restart) with internationally renowned actors such as Carice van Houten (Game of Thrones), Claes Bang (Square, The Girl in the Spider's Web) or Hanna Alström (Kingsman 1a 2), will enter Czech cinemas on 14 March 2019.

Simon Mawer

After studying zoology at Oxford, the successful British writer worked as a biology teacher in England, Cyprus and Malta, and published his first literary work, Chimera, when he was in his early forties. It went on to win the McKitterick Prize, awarded to the best British debut novel, and he lived up to the expectations with his next book, Mendel's Dwarf. It was followed by the novels The Gospel According to Judas and The Fall, for which he received the Boardman-Tasker Award. His greatest success with Czech readers came with his prose novel The Glass Room (nominated in 2009 for the Man Booker Prize, the most prestigious book award in the English-speaking world), which was also the basis for a theatre performance at the Brno City Theatre. The author's work is published in Czech by Kniha Zlín.

Immediately after graduating from school, she became a member of the ensemble of Divadlo pod Palmovkou and has been working for a long time in the association Kašpar at the Theatre in Celetná, where she has played a number of roles and where in 2015 they staged her play-documentary about the duel between Bulgakov and Stalin called Isolate but Preserve. But her acting career began earlier - in 1970 she was chosen for Karel Kachyna's film Už zase jumpču přes kaluže (I'm jumping over puddles again). Four years later, she appeared in How to Drown Dr. Cloud or in the fairy tale The Little Mermaid, and her big acting opportunity came in the historical drama In the Arms of the Lioness (1994). She is better known from TV movies (Death of a Talented Shoemaker, Five with a star, Fairy Tale Fountain), fairy tales (The Tale of the Ebony Horse, A spider with emerald eyes, About the Fairy Arnoštka) and series (Man at the Town Hall, Green Seven Ranch, Family ties, Streets, Gendarmerie humour, Ward 1 cases, I do, Mattoni).
