Sometimes it just rains

New edition of Michel Faber's distinctive debut

All he had to do was write in a drawer for twenty years, learn the craft, and eventually let his wife convince him that he wouldn't have to write just for himself anymore. He won the Ian St James competition at his first attempt with Sometimes It Just Rains and triumphed in the Macallan Prize with Fish the same year. The promising author was soon noticed by the Edinburgh publishing house Canongate and in 1998 they published his eponymous collection of short stories Sometimes It Just Rains, for which he received the St.Andrew's Cross Award for best first novel.

In his short story collection, Michel Faber has demonstrated an exceptionally vivid imagination, a love of language and an uncanny versatility. His short stories are playful and deeply moving, satirical yet honestly human. In them, we meet a God who finds the Earth in a landfill, love in a sex shop, and fish swimming in the air and lurking in the alleys. Michel Faber is often compared to Ian McEwan or Roald Dahl.
