In the Castle and Below – The Sequel.
In the Castle and Below – The Sequel is a vast social-historical novel that builds on the legacy of Božena Němcová, carrying her themes into a new century. It follows the transformation of a town whose inhabitants are learning to live between tradition and modernisation, between craftsmanship and industry, and between personal responsibility and the common good.
At the centre of the story are a library, a cooperative, and a communal field – three pillars that connect the lives of people from both the castle and the town below. Characters like Vojtěch, Anička, Sýkora, Matěj, Karel, and Mrs Skočdopolová face challenges that test their character: economic pressures, environmental threats, social inequalities, and questions of justice and memory.
The novel follows how individual stories give rise to a community capable of building bridges, both literally and figuratively – bridges between generations, between the town and the countryside, and between the past and the future.
This sequel is not a reconstruction of the original work, but its creative expansion. It introduces new characters, new conflicts, and new hopes, while preserving the ethos of humanity, solidarity, and respect for work that was also characteristic of Božena Němcová.
A novel about how the true strength of a community grows not from power, but from work, sharing, and the courage to change the world step by step.
