Selfie sticks are a relatively new gadget designed in response to the phenomenon of the 'selfie' photo. They consist of a plastic or metal telescopic pole topped with a tripod mount or holder for attaching a camera or smartphone, allowing you to take perfect selfies with minimum effort.

Phone size
Thanks to the adjustable holders, selfie sticks allow you to mount phones of different sizes. Although most holders fit the largest smartphones, always check the maximum phone size before buying.
Length
Selfie sticks are roughly the same size when collapsed but vary in length when fully extended. The shortest sticks are around 60 cm, with the longest around 120 cm.
Material and weight
- Plastic – lighter, more suitable for occasional use
- Metal – usually aluminium, slightly heavier but generally stronger and more durable
Remote control
Basic selfie sticks don't come with a remote system, and therefore it is necessary to set the timer on your camera before framing the shot. More sophisticated selfie sticks come with a remote control system that communicates with your smartphone via Bluetooth or a headphone jack. To take a photo, simply press the button located on the handle.
Selfie holders with a wireless remote control contain batteries. They can be charged using the same microUSB cable that you use to charge your smartphone (not iPhone). The charge level is indicated by an LED light. Selfie sticks can generally take about 500 photos on one charge. If the battery dies, the stick can still also be used without the remote control. You can also use a powerbank to recharge the selfie stick when out and about.
